Future Ahead
Another thing I always keep an eye on is the increasing storage capacity of flash drives
. It is interesting to see how much USB storage we might be able to avail ourselves of in the near future.
Now that
128GB
and
256GB
are out as the highest current capabilities one has to wonder what will be next. As amazing as this new breakthrough is I wouldn’t hold my breath. Because recently I heard that there’s even a 512GB flash drive out there. Supposedly only made by one manufacturer and not for commercial application. Military perhaps? Super-secret agents? I have no idea if its true but if you know anything about this please grace us with your feedback. But only if you won’t have to get terminated then…

Capacities
Ok, onto 16GB flash drives. You know, some people say that going beyond
8GB
is a bit pointless unless the switch has been made from
USB 2.0 to USB 3.0
. The argument is that even the highest 2.0 transfer rate is too slow for transferring so much data. But I wonder how many people actually have such large files or compilations (lets say 10GB) that it has to be transferred or accessed all at once? And who says you have to watch? If you have a bit patience with your files, a fairly good computer and flash drive there really should be no problem. After all its great to be able to save and mobilize 16GB of data. Exactly how much you can store is shown in the following list.

Capacities
When it comes to
8GB flash drives there can be sort of threshold with proper file format and recognition. Some operating systems that use regular FAT or NFTS can show compatibiltiy issues with memory sticks over 4GB. That’s because the files may get too large to handle (beyond the very same 4GB) or the overhead gets clogged. It’s rather extreme situations but some users need that type of performance.
So if you ever come across a problem like an incomplete or incorrect file transfer just make sure you switch to the eFAT
file system
which is specifically suited for USB flash drives. You can get drivers from the net, just google downloads for “eFat” or “exFat”. For Windows you can click here:
exFat for Windows XP
.
Personally I’ve never had any difficulties with this but having seen a few posts in the forum world I figured I let you know in case you need such extreme performances. For most files there should be no problem and the following table gives you an overview of how much you can store on an 8GB memory stick.
