What exactly makes a USB flash drive superior to a regular hard drive? Are there also downsides?

Flash Drive

vs.

Hard Drive

To me, there’s several factors that make it different from and for the most part better than a traditional hard disk:

1.The writing of data is not by magnetic spinning disks but purely electronic (so flash drive is actually a misnomer because there’s nothing driving). This flash technology in memory sticks makes data storage safer and more durable as outside magnetism doesn’t really effect them.

2.Since there are no moving mechanical parts there’s also no noise.

3.By the same token, there’s no heat generated and hence less power drawn.

4. Flash memory is more shock resistant and withstands extremer pressures and temperatures .

5. Writing and reading of data is faster once utilized with USB 3.0 (480 MB/sec compared to 150 MB/sec of a hard drive).

Pretty compelling points, huh?

But what about possible disadvantages. Well, there’s only three things I can come up with:

1.With magnetic drives, experts and special programs can often recover “lost” or overwritten data whereas when flash drives overwrite the data is erased for good.

2.Memory sticks can usually be rewritten up to 10,000 times while hard disks supposedly can be rewritten up to 50,000 times. However, these numbers are not a set thing and some flash drives may actually last several 100,000 read-write cycles.

3. Flash drives are easier to lose.

One could also add that storage capacities are lower but seeing that memory sticks these days can hold up to 64GB or even 128GB I think that point is becoming obsolete. So in my mind the benefits of USB flash drives pretty much outweigh those of hard disks. But maybe you disagree? If you can think of any other factors – pro or con – please feel free to join the debate.

So you’re an upcoming rock ‘n’ roll star but also have a geek inside you? Maybe you record your smashing riffs onto mp3 with your laptop or home computer? And when you hear the word strings you think of data and transfer instead of just the newest chord you’ve learned? Then my friend, it sounds like guitar flash drives are up your alley.

But even if you have no musical talent – I’m sure you too can appreciate a memory stick with a kick ass design. Right? Most of these guitar flash drives have a rubber coating and hide their USB interface under a removable arm. Memory can range from 1 – 8GB and its functionality may be indicated by a red light LED. For the heavy metal fan they come packed in gift boxes of steel or tin. If you like your metal more precious however and prefer the acoustic type you can go for the golden USB guitar necklace .

But back to our truly electric guitars that make sticks rock. Types I’ve seen so far are the red Camp Rock, Les Paul and YZC. In case you don’t know what either of these names mean I give you a quick rolldown. Camp Rock is a musical comedy movie with the Jonas Brothers and Demi Lovato. Les Paul is a model made by the legendary jazz guitarist of the same name in cooperation with the Gibson company. And YZC, well….you got me there. Maybe it’s a hidden satanic message?

Well, let’s not engage in any more speculation. It’s now time to dim the lights and pick up your guitar flash drive. Then lift the curtains and rock & roll down memory lane…

Not only are memory sticks convenient but as medical flash drives they can actually save your life! Especially in an emergency – where access to your medical ID and record is crucial – they come in as smooth and fast operators. They can store your allergies, conditions and prescriptions that you’re on or shouldn’t take. Also, they can include your medical insurance and contact information of your friends and relatives. So basically, a medical memory stick is the upgraded version of a medi-tag and can really make life easier for you and the emergency personnel. Or other first responders!

USB medical alerts can be especially vital for the elder, disabled or handicapped. If you have problems remembering your medical history or just don’t want to worry about memorizing, it sure is great to still be able to provide your live saving information. Then think of a situation where you’re traveling or aren’t able to communicate due to unconsciousness or some other reason. If one needs to be rushed to a hospital an emergency flash drive can optimize patient care and by the same token it might save you the trip.

One thing a USB medical alert can’t do however is rescue your computer. I’m afraid that’s a different emergency that requires different measures. That type of virus infection may still be alleviated with a memory stick however, albeit a more regular one. How? Simply by backing up your data or running an anti-virus program from it.

Well, hoping that you place more emphasis on a human life though it’s definitely worth considering to combine your medical flash drive with a memory stick lanyard or USB bracelet . This could ensure maximum first aid. And not just for your own personal health and safety but for your pet’s too…
